Tracing back Shih Tzus history
There are a lot of theories about the origins of Shih Tzus. Many people believe that Shih Tzus were the product of mating between Pekingese breeds and Lhasa Apso. Lhasa Apsos are Tibetan dogs brought by the Dalai Lama to the Chinese emperors around the 17th century.
Shih Tzu dogs were very treasured by the Chinese royals that no Shih Tzu was sold, traded, or even given away. Not until the year 1930 that the breed reached England and Norway. The breed became famous throughout Europe and was introduced by returning US military members. The American Kennel Club recognized the Shih Tzu breed in 1969.
The meaning behind Shih Tzus name
Shih Tzu is pronounced as “Shee Tzoo.” It came from the Chinese term meaning “lion” because its features resembled those of the lion in traditional oriental art.
Caring for a Shih Tzu
Shih Tzu likes to spend their time with their owners. So if you are looking for the perfect companion, then the Shih Tzu breed might be the one for you! Shih Tzus make fun and loving companion dogs.
They are a great addition to the family, especially in small enclosed places like apartments. Shih Tzus require little to minimal exercises so walks and indoor playtime would be sufficient already.
Grooming maintenance
Shih Tzu naturally has a long and flowing coat that you need to maintain healthy and shiny. Their fur maintenance would require daily brushing and grooming to avoid tangles, matting, and foul odor. Make sure to have regular visits with a professional dog groomer!
Moods and personality
Shih Tzus have been known to be outgoing for their affectionate and charming personality. Do not expect them to become your guard dogs since they will be very sweet and cuddly to whoever is at home! They will be wanting to be by your side 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you have an instant best friend.
Dog training
Their good personality also comes with a stubborn side. Shih Tzus are known to have things done in their own way. They are smart but training them can require longer patience since it can be frustrating. One example would be Shih Tzus appealing to their owners so, in the end, they tend to be not fully trained.
Munchies and treats
Shih Tzus, just like every other dog, are required to be served with good food and proper nutrition. A Shih Tzu’s ideal weight ranges between 9 to 16 pounds. Consult with your dog’s veterinarian to determine the best diet applicable and suitable dog food for your baby.
